Untethered Teaching Communities of Practice Portfolio

Untethered Teaching Portfolio

Faculty Development

I co-facilitated four communities of practice (CoP) over the past two years. The first year (2014-2015) consisted of a year-long cohort of 24 faculty divided up into three separate CoPs that met monthly. We built the course using Google+ Communities and used Google Drive with shared documents (e.g., shared agendas). The second year (2015-2016) was limited to one CoP of 10 faculty which met weekly for the first quarter and monthly the second quarter. As a pilot for school wide adoption of Canvas LMS, we built the course in Canvas. These CoPs are hybrid courses with faculty–an online component and face-to-face component. The CoPs were designed for faculty to become “elegant iPads users” by using Apple TVs or Splashtop in the classroom to facilitate good pedagogical practice. The portfolio includes a presentation about the CoP model, the full report from year one, and class documents from year two.

Examples from Year One (2014-2015)

Created with Google+ and Google Drive

Robbin Riedy and I presented at NW/MET in 2015, “Step Away from the Podium: A Year of Untethered Teaching.” Video below and slides available.

A final report from the first year reflecting on what worked well, changes for future iterations, and comments from faculty participants (one of which is highlighted below).

“I want to acknowledge how patient and understanding Robbin and Ryan were during every CoP meeting. They were able to work effectively with us at all of our different skill/ability levels. The CoP hour was always the highlight of my week.”

Examples from Year Two (2015-2016)

Created with the Canvas LMS

We built the course in Canvas with modules for each week that contained information for faculty to complete/read before class, information about in class activities, and homework.
